Have you ever gotten Amish Friendship Bread from a friend or co-worker? I know I have, and it’s always been a joy to receive and then to eat! Well, seeing as I recently finished college, I believe that now is an appropriate time to introduce Beer Bread to you. Surprisingly enough, I actually did not learn about Beer Bread through my college friends. Instead, my co-workers raved about it, and I had it for the first time at a company event. It’s a little more dense than other breads and has a thick, crispy crust. Moist, buttery, and slightly salty with a hint of beer flavor–this bread did not disappoint me.

A couple months went by and I attended another event that also had Beer Bread. This time, I was determined to find the recipe! To my surprise, the recipe is actually really easy! My co-workers and I debated what kind of beer to use (many site recommendations ranged from a porter or Guinness to Budweiser, so needless to say, I was confused). We decided that I should try it with Blue Moon but Trader Joe’s was out of stock so I ended up choosing a Bohemian Lager (Trader Joe’s brand) because the color of it was not too light or too dark (how professional of me, right?) and it was only $5.99 for a six pack! It actually worked out great, and I brought some leftovers from the event so we could compare my version to the restaurant one. The catered bread (from work) was a lot saltier than mine but the consensus was that my version brought out more of the beer flavor than the other. So really, those factors can be adjusted to your liking. Despite these small differences, our cravings were satisfied and now we have plenty of beer bread to share.

Here is the simple recipe:

Beer Bread (adapted from Food.com)

  • 3 cups all-purpose flour (sifted–important: you must sift! If you don’t have a sifter, spoon the flour into the measuring cup instead of using the measuring cup to scoop it.)
  • 3 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 12 oz. can or bottle of beer
  • 1/2 stick of butter–melted (you can use more or less if you prefer)

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Mix dry ingredients together. Then add in the beer. In a greased bread pan (I used a little extra butter to grease it) pour mixture in, and then pour melted butter over the mixture. Bake for about an 1 hour (maybe a little longer depending on your oven). The top should be golden brown and crispy! Give the top of the bread a nice push and if it feels pretty firm, it’s done. The crust cooks faster than the outside so be patient or else you’ll get undercooked bread.  Once you’ve removed the bread from the oven, cool for about 15 minutes and then enjoy!

Not only is this an easy way to indulge in some delicious bread, but it is a great way to get your friends involved, too! Just like Amish Friendship Bread, you can quickly prepare bags of the dry ingredients and hand them out to friends (along with a bottle or can of beer, of course!). Oh, and don’t forget to include the baking instructions! The only thing they will need is butter to complete the recipe. It’s a fantastic way to incorporate food, beer, friendship, and life together! For lack of a better way to say it, this is definitely my “college version” staple of Friendship Bread, but don’t let the reference fool you, the bread actually tastes phenomenal. Add it to a bowl of soup, chili or a salad and you’ll have yourself a wonderful meal!
